Cooperatives currently operate in volume markets in a fierce competition with their purely profit-orientated competitors. Cooperatives basically have two options to  survive in this environment: Either they replicate and optimize the business model of their competitors or they are trying to differentiate themselves from these.

However, the detected approach of various cooperatives to the business models of their purely profit-oriented competitors is likely to lead to the disclosure of the Co-operative Identity, without achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. In order to continue to be active in a competitive market environment, cooperatives again have to reflect on their own strengths and to seek strategic differentiation. Basic business objectives have to be reconsidered.

The results were summarized in the interim report. The developed conceptual model in the first phase is intended to serve in a next phase of the project as a basis for determining the actual company-specific strategic differentiation potentials.
